Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.

The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

samsung ln52a550 screen sizeWith standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously Consider This Samsung 52" TV, July 9, 2008
By
Samsung Fan (Philly)

I have had my TV for nearly a month now and I love it. I am coming from a 27" CRT TV, so of course, I'm going to be impressed. However, here are a few things I would like to pass along to those of you in the market for a new flat panel TV: * LCD versus Plasma: If you are having a hard time deciding between LCD and plasma, LCD has nearly caught up with plasma in terms of being the better flat panel TV. You still pay a bit more for a comprable LCD though. If you are hooking up a PC to your TV, will be pausing live TV, or anything else that keeps the picture still for a while, definitely consider an LCD as plasmas still have their problems with ghosting. I was in a Circuit City recently and looked at a new plasma TV with all the "anti burn-in" technologies built in. After accidently leaving an image on the screen for 4 hours, there was obvious "burn-in" on the screen. * Screen Size: I originally started looking at 42" TVs, but realized that the picture quality is so good on HDTVs that you can buy a much larger TV even if your seating distance is only a few feet away. So, I limited my search to the 46" - 52" range. Another factor to consider is whether or not you want to spend extra for a 1080p set or settle for 720p. Most experts will say that you can't notice the difference between the two in a set smaller than 50". So, you may want to save the money and go with 720p. Also, I was worried if my TV would look too "big" in my family room, but trust me, it looks great. I'm so used to the screen size now that anything smaller just doesn't look as nice anymore. * HD and SD Channel Quality The HD channels look fantastic. I have an HD package with Dish Network and all of the HD channels are incredibly clear. The SD channels are certainly bearable, but a big step down from watching SD channels on my 27" CRT TV (in terms of picture clarity). * PIP This feature will not work for most people as you must have an analog signal. Those of you with digital cable or satellite TV will not be able to use it. For everyone else, it seems like it would be ok. * Sound I didn't have as big of a complaint as everyone else did. I could hear everything loud and clear. I will soon be hooking it up to a home theatre system to improve the sound, but as for basic TV speakers, they seemed ok to me. * Price If you are considering a TV purchase, buying from Amazon is a must. They typically have the lowest price (much lower than big box stores) and you don't have to pay S/H or taxes. The customer service was excellent any time I contacted them with regards to receiving a price adjustment. The delivery service was good too. * Picture Settings Most people will complain about the "Dynamic" mode of the TV saying that this is what the big box electronic stores use to make the picture look brighter, sharper, etc. This is true, but keep in mind that if you want to use the DNIe (Samsung's picture enhancing engine), you will need to use "Dynamic". I'm still figuring out if DNIe is worth having on, but what I did was set my "Dynamic" settings to be very similar to the "Standard" settings. This way the screen isn't so bright. As for the rest of the picture quality settings, I left most of them the same except for a few minor adjustments for my personal liking. * No Auto-Motion This was definitely a struggle for me. Do I buy a 46" 6 series to get Auto-Motion or a 52" 5 series? I've seen fast moving action scenes in both sports and movies and you can at times pick up some jutter (especially when the background is also moving). If you are really picky, consider getting Auto-Motion (which you can set to off, low, etc), but for most people the 5 series with out Auto-Motion is fine. I don't really notice anything most of the time unless I am really looking for it. * Bonus Since you've taken the time to read my long review, here is a little bonus. After you buy this TV (or any Samsung), register it online and they will give you an additional 3 free months of product warranty. Happy Shopping!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, June 4, 2008
By
Secret Santa

A while ago I got a Philips 52PFL7422 LCD from Costco. I couldn't get the Philips to look right, even after adjustments using DVE, so decided to return it and get a different brand / model. After some research and in-store comparisons, I decided to get the Samsung LN 52A550. I checked Amazon and the price was less than I paid for the Philips, and I trusted Amazon, being a satisfied customer of theirs for years. From the start the Samsung was MUCH better than my previous set. It had none of the issues I had with the Philips. I was surprised how well the colors and black levels looked before I did any tweaking. Wanting to get the best picture I could, I set all the enhancements off and used DVE (Digital Video Essentials) to fine-tune the set. The result was a great picture, not overblown like store displays, but not dim or washed out either. To summarize, here is my opinion of the pros and cons of this set. Pros: 1. Great contrast - adjusted backlight, contrast and brightness so the blacks look great and whites are not blown out. A really nice, not-too-bright, natural looking image. 2. Great Color temperature and Tint 3. Menus are well organized and VERY comprehensive - many advanced adjustments are available without entering special service menus. 4. USB photo and music interface was nice and menus were comprehensive. 5. Clean-looking frame and pedestal. 6. Noise Reduction and Dynamic Contrast modes, when needed, offer subtle enhancements without degrading the image. 7. Great HD quality from Blu-Ray/PS3. Games and Blu-Rays look fantastic. Even older non-HD DVD's look very good. 8. Great HD and Good SD quality from Cable Box (after adjusting the factory default contrast down to mid-60's, sharpness down to around 0, edge enhancement off). 9. Good quality from Wii and Playstation 2 - contrast, etc. settings similar to Cable Box. The games looked surprisingly good even though they are 480i or 480p. Be sure to not ovewrdrive contrast or sharpness. Use backlight to brighten if necessary. 10. HP Laptop (with NVidia graphics) connected via HDMI looked great. TV displayed various resolutions properly without chopping off the top or sides. 11. Low glare screen. Not as matte as some others, but definitely not high gloss like other Samsung LCD's. This was a must-have for me due to the bright room where the TV is installed. 12. Very good off-center viewing angles. - MUCH better than my previous LCD set. 13. Remote has good-sized buttons and a backlight. Cons: 1. Sound is hollow unless you perform some adjustments (see AVS Forums for suggested settings). Not really a factor for me since I connect up to an external stereo system anyway. Didn't Try: 1. VGA/PC Video input. 2. Digital sound outputs. 3. Composite video input. All-in-all I am very happy with the purchase and with Amazon shipping and customer service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Picture., September 19, 2008
By bunnyrabbit4 (New Orleans, LA USA)

I teach film and wanted something that would enhance my viewing experience without overwhelming my medium sized, 14 wide by 20 living area. This TV is perfect and the sound, unlike some of the smaller Samsungs, is very good. While not the theatrical surround sound experience, the down facing speakers work well and produce realistic tones whether you are listening to voice or music. They also allow for a clean appearance which is further enhanced by the touch of red screen. If you are not the techie type and cringe at hooking up one more wire or don't want to lay out another $500 on sound, you should be quite happy with this set just the way it is.

My couch is about 12 feet from the screen, while the arm chairs go as close as 6. I find this distance just about perfect for watching the 50 inch screen. I've even had a few friends comment that they almost felt dizzy watching large, fast moving, objects on the screen. If you are wondering how big to go, I personally don't think paying $$$ for an inch or two more will make a difference unless you have a very large room and want to bump up to 60 or 65". The kids should be adequately wowed by their video games on this one. I also like the set of video connectors on the side of the TV which allow you to connect cameras and other devices without having to get to the back of the set.

My TV arrived fully assembled in the box. No struggling to get the base on. Amazon offered free white glove delivery and the gentleman placed the TV on my stand without so much as leaving a finger print on the frame or screen. Since the TV is quite heavy this was good to have. He also told me about adding a "line filter" to remove sine waves from the AC as he said some clients encountered small squiggly lines on their screen. Luckily the power center I bought already had digital filters on all the lines.

BTW that power center is the Belkin PureAV F9A1033fc10 from Amazon. I also purchased a SONY HDMI cable which you need to connect your DVD player and sometimes the Cable TV to your TV. HDMI is a much higher standard of connector and DOES make a huge difference in quality over traditional RCA connectors. Most local dealers carry MONSTER brand cables. I have found them to be no better or worse than the high quality devices provided by the above vendors. The only thing MONSTER about them is the price!!

I should add that CEVA was the company that delivered the TV and sent a very polite and knowledgable man to do it. He even disposed of the box and all of the packing for me. I'd never heard of the company before but I was able to communicate with them about the details of delivery by speaking directly to a rep at their local New Orleans area warehouse. Hurricane Gustav was in the Gulf at that time so a timely delivery was important to me. I would recommend this company to others.

I've had the set for two months and use it with a new Sony s350 Blu-ray player. The only problem I've had so far is not wanting to leave home!! Great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for 2 months solid, November 24, 2008
By T. Taphorn (OHIO)

I'd like to give this 4.5 stars...I can't give 5, and 4 is too low, but amazon only limits this to whole stars, so 4 it is.

Got this item at a steal of a price from a local retailer who was desperate for business. That aside, I had done plenty of research prior to purchasing and after a week, I can say I have no "buyer's remorse" for jumping on a TV at a great price. We've been looking to upgrade our old 27" zenith tube and the choice has been between this set and the 50" Panasonic PZ85U. Finally getting the opportunity to see these side by side in the store was where I made my final decision. I thought the Samsung looked a little more natural than the Panasonic as I come from a photography background. The Panasonic just looks a little too warm for my taste next to this set. Now...I'm sure neither one of the sets were calibrated at the store, and honestly, I don't think anyone can go wrong with either of these TVs...both produce an exceptional picture, but I liked the A650 over the PZ85U. To boot, the final price on the 650 was 50$ cheaper than what the salesman would give me the 85U for, so we got the Samsung.

Now that I have it home, here are some impressions...

Video - The digital tuner built into the set means you don't need a fancy box to receive over the air broadcasts after Feb. 2009. Oh yeah...the hi-def broadcasts out now over the air look fantastic on this set. One thing I have not yet had the chance to test is a separate HD video source since I don't have an HD dvd or Blu-Ray player, but I can say that the 480i my current DVD player puts out is pretty awesome looking on this TV as well. We fired up Ratatouille over the weekend...conveniently, the DVD comes with a set of test-patterns you can adjust the contrast, brightness, sharpness, and color with so I did the best I could prior to hitting play. All I can say is wow...the shadow detail was fantastic compared to my old tube and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie. I used the same settings to watch Sunday night football last night, and I tell you what, I don't know how I'm going to be able to watch standard definition sports anymore. No motion blur at all with this set, crystal clear and sharp pictures...the only distracting thing is that now I can tell when the cameras that are recording the action on the field are having problems focusing accurately. You literally see every detail with this TV set-up correctly.

Audio - This is the only area where I "ding" this set. Now...for most folks out there, this is going to be part of a Home Theater or entertainment system, so they will have a separate audio source, but for me, this TV is all I have (for now). The audio is by no means bad...it is just not as crisp and clear as I would have expected. The audio is a little muffled and maybe after some more tweaking of settings, it will get better, but if I had an entertainment center, I would certainly buy a separate speaker for the center channel and turn the one from the TV off.

Looks / Usability - Wow...this set looks great in the basement. The "Touch of Color" design is sleek, and it will look fantastic once it's mounted on the wall. The touch-pad power / channel / volume / menu are a sleek 21st century feature and give it a hint of class. The remote and settings you can access is very well laid out and intuitive. There is almost nothing you can't tweak. Samsung even gives you the ability to tweak the white balance over the RGB color scale without having to access a special menu through a remote sequence (basically these levels control how your TV is set-up to interpret colors from the video source). A nice feature that I don't recommend messing with unless you know what you're doing...being a part time photographer on the weekends, this is a welcome feature to get the absolute best color out of my TV.

The number of inputs on the back and side is more than ample...I don't ever know that I'll have 4 HDMI sources to input, but it's nice to know I can. There are 3 component video inputs as well, so unless you have like 5 gaming systems and 3 DVD players, you should be fine with the number of inputs.

Overall, I'm very happy with this TV, and would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone. If they made a 46" version, my neighbor would buy one too as his space does not allow a 50" set and he wants to maximize his screen. He's going to go with the Panasonic 85U, but after seeing my Samsung A650, he might be re-locating his space to be able to step up to a 50" TV.

UPDATE 3 DEC 2008:
A word of caution. If you are going to watch this TV even though Samsung claims there is no break in period for issues like image retention and burn in, you need to break in the phosphors on this TV. Avoid gaming or anything that has a static logo on the screen for an extended period of time in order to uniformly age the phosphors that make up the plasma picture for at least 100 hours. Keep the contrast and brightness dialed back to 50-60% during this break in period.

We recently noticed some Image Retention after watching 4:3 format picture from the cable box for 4 hours one afternoon. I popped in a DVD for my son and noticed that the edges where the black bars were from the 4:3 format picture were brighter than the center of the screen. You could also see a vertical line on the left and right of the screen separating the regions. However, this is correctable. A few hours of the scrolling white bars across the TV removed the retention issue and the picture is once again uniform.

UPDATE 6 JAN 2009:
Well, after hooking up the Blu-Ray player and firing up Kung-Fu Panda which we got for Christmas on Blu-Ray, all I can say is that this TV has an amazing picture. Shadow and bright scene detail was spot on...No black crush or white clipping. Motion blur? - Nope...not once in any of the martial arts sequences that I could see. This plasma performed exactly as expected...perfectly. I got an HDMI cable though monoprice.com, and if there's a quality issue, I have no idea where it might be. There is no reason to spend mega $$$ on Monster cables. Keep in mind that the out of the box settings for Brightness and Contrast need to be adjusted so you can see all the nuances in the shadows and bright scenes.

Oh yeah...the playoff football over the air in HD...amazing. I don't know how I kept my old set for as long as I did. The picture is so clear you can literally see when the cameras are having small focus issues with the action on the field. No, this is not image blur, it's a focusing issue. When everything is in focus, the picture and action is fantastic. I can't wait for the superbowl party and March Madness in the upcoming months. This set was worth every penny.

The only issue is audio...again, it's not bad, but it's clearly not up to par with the video this set puts out. When I get a receiver and speakers, I will not be using the TV as the center channel...I will buy a separate center speaker. However, for the time being the audio is acceptable for what I'm doing.

Ultimately about 2 months after my purchase, I could not be happier with this TV. It does get a little warm when it's on for 12 hours a day between the Wii, movies, and Football, but the picture has been stellar since day 1 and I have noticed -0- pixel fading, burn in, or Image retention since I took action to prevent it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great display, amazing value, July 17, 2008
By Kikuchiy0 "kikuchiy0" (TX)

I have had my PN50a650 for a almost 2 weeks now, and have been very impressed. Colors can be calibrated to be almost perfectly accurate, and black levels are great as well. There are not many professional reviews of the 650 series out yet, but the reviews of the 550 series have been extremely positive:

http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-pn50a550/4505-6482_7-32887581.html?tag=prod.txt.1
http://www.hometheatermag.com/plasmadisplays/808samup/
http://www.guidetohometheater.com/flatpaneldisplays/708sampn50/index4.html

The 650 series adds an additional HDMI connection, a more advanced version of Samsung's DNIe picture quality enhancement engine, a better glare-reducing screen filter, and the Touch of Color bezel that shows a hint of dark red from some angles. There are a number of display setting recommendations in the reviews noted above and on www.avsforum.com message boards that provide a good starting point for a great picture, but professional calibration or use of a calibration DVD/Blu-Ray disk such as Digital Video Essentials can really dial in a reference-quality image.

Overall, I highly recommend this set. I have had no issues with it, and Blu-Ray images in particular amazingly clean and vibrant. This set is a great value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Samsung almost nailed this one., December 22, 2008
By G. Gray

I purchased the HL72A650 after spending 3 weeks with a 73735 Mitsubishi DLP. I purchased the Mits from Best Buy and like all Mits DLPs the color was way off out of the box. I paid Best Buy to do an ISF calibration on the 73735. I quizzed them and they assured me before hand it would be a full calibration. The Best Buy calibration was $250 and so I agreed. The calibration Best Buy did helped immensely, but in fact, despite the claims, Best Buy does not really do a full true calibration. Of course I did not know that at the time. They set brightness, contrast, and sharpness levels, then the set the grayscale but they did not calibrate the primary and secondary colors to spec. The Mits needs the Full Monty calibration it is a mess with out doing that. From what I understand they can look spectacular afterward it a real pro does the full deal and does it right. Mine calibrated by Best Buy not so much. That left me in the position where I would have had to pay an independent to calibrate the set all over again to do the job right it so I returned the 73735 to Best Buy.

I then bought the Samsung through Amazon and that experience was excellent with the white glove delivery process. The Sammy has very good color out of the box and it is also quite sharp out of the box. It is strong in the areas where the Mitsubishi is weak. Unfortunately the Samsung uses the Texas Instrument Dark Chip 3. The Mits uses the Dark Chip 4 which has better blacks and significantly better shadow detail resulting in much better overall contrast.

The use of the Dark Chip 3 is not really the whole problem by itself. The problem is that at some point Samsung decided to remove the iris from their lamp DLPs light engines. An irus is used on DLPs to deepen blacks on the fly as the screen changes. Perhaps this deletion was done to make the LED DLPs more competitive against the lamp set. The net result is a TV that is very good in most every way except it has poor contrast and black levels for a TV at this price point. Excellent black levels and contrast are typically a given for DLPs.

I am keeping the Samsung but I am more than a bit disappointed with it. I also own a 3 year old HP 65" DLP which has an iris and mkes much better blacks. If you can get by with a 67" set, the Samsung LED DLP, HL67A750 will give you the Samsung color accuracy and great blacks with top notch shadow detail. If you need the 72" or larger size, get one of the Mitsubishis but be prepared to spend $300 plus on an ISF calibrator who really knows what he is doing. The Dark Chip 4 has 40 percent better contrast than the Dark Chip 3 so even the lesser priced Mitsubishi DLPs which also lack an iris make deep, almost plasma like blacks.

If the blacks were at the level of current Mitsubihis DLPs or even the Sammy bulb sets of a few years ago that included an iris, the HL72A650 with its accurate color and excellent resolution would deserve 5 stars plus. As it is, I can only give it 3 stars. If you mostly watch movies, than 3 stars might be a stretch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best TV for the price, June 29, 2008
By mets rule "mets" (florida)

I just purchased the Samsung HL-72A650. What an amazing picture for the size of this TV. With the cost of a LCD or Plazma at 65 inches, it was a pleasent surprise that I can get a quality TV for under $2500 with an additional 7 inches. If you are not mounting a TV on the wall and need a large TV do to the size of the room, I would definetly go with the Samsung HL-72A650. Samsung HL72A650 72-Inch 1080p Slim DLP HDTV

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, June 25, 2008
By Webduo "HD Fanatic" (Illinois)

I just upgraded from a 1 year old 65 lamp projection HD set from Hitachi (which was great for a lamp projection) and was blown away! HD DVDs and Blu-Ray takes on a whole new world with this set - and was a STEAL for the price! Takes up much less space and along with the stand (I purchased this also) fits perfect with tons of space for the players and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing TV and amazing delivery, February 21, 2009
By S. Binder (Chadds Ford, PA)

I never do reviews, but in this case I have to. Even though DLP is a dying technology there is no way to get a TV this size without going to a front projector. I was planning on doing just that until I read many of the reviews for the current technology. This TV is absolutely amazing. It had a funny smell for about 2 weeks, but since then I have had no issues at all.

I was skeptical about using Amazon to purchase a TV, but after the order and amazing delivery process I can't see purchasing a TV any other way. The delivery company even moved my old TV to my garage so that I could have it hauled away. That is indeed great service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy on HUGE DLP Screen!, July 25, 2008
By Kenneth P. Mourey "Ken Mourey" (Blue Springs, Missouri)

It's BIG, it's Crystal Clear, it's a GREAT VALUE at the AMAZON prices! I couldn't be happier. And, it was "WHITE GLOVE" Delivery at a FABULOUS cost for shipping, beating all other deals I saw by as much as $400.00 for shipping and the "white glove" option to have it delivered into your home and unboxed an placed into your room and hooked up for trial of the item to determine if any damage was incurred during the shipping process. I highly recommend AMAZON and the Vendor, 6Ave Electronics!!
